Probablement l'objectif le plus produit au monde, le Helios 44 et ses variantes (monture 39 ou 42) a été créé sur la base du Biotar 58mm f/2 de Carl Zeiss. Son développement a du commencer vers 1951 pour une première production en 1958 à l'usine KMZ (Krasnogorski Mekhanicheskii Zavod près de Moscou) en Russie. Au début surnommé "БТК" - "БиоТар Красногорский" (BioTar Krasnogorski), il produit un bokeh typique tournant (swirly bokeh) qui met en valeur le sujet de manière incroyable.
