Il s'agit de l'un des meilleurs téléobjectifs avec zoom de la gamme EF, avec une optique comparable à celle d'un objectif à focale unique. Cet objectif est doté de quatre lentilles en verre UD pour corriger les aberrations chromatiques, ainsi que de plusieurs niveaux de zoom pour une mise au point interne. Il produit ainsi des images de grande qualité sur l'ensemble de la plage de focales. Il est compatible avec les multiplicateurs de focale EF 1,4× et 2×.

A pris un coup, la bague de zoom doit être un peu forcé pour atteindre les 200mm. N'empêche en rien son utilisation de manière optimale.
